Maldives - Germany

Maldives established diplomatic relations with Germany on 5 July 1966, making Germany only the 6th country for the Maldives to establish diplomatic relations with after gaining independence less than a year before, on 26 July 1965. This signifies the importance the now independent and sovereign Maldives attached to engaging with Germany both bilaterally, and in the multilateral fora.

Similarly, the importance Germany attached to engaging with the Maldives was signified by the accreditation of a non-resident Ambassador to the Maldives. The Ambassador of Germany in Colombo presented credentials to the Head of State of the Maldives on 11 October 1966, effectively accrediting the Embassy of Germany in Colombo to the Maldives. Since then, all Ambassadors of Germany in Colombo has been concurrently accredited to the Maldives and the Embassy of Germany in Colombo has been actively engaging with the Government of Maldives.

As Germany kept increasing its engagement with the Maldives and went on to become an important trade and investment partner of the Maldives, the Government of Maldives decided to open a resident Embassy of Maldives in Berlin. This came to fruition when the Embassy was officially opened on 28 September 2016.
